Traditional 'Bonderam' at Malar, Divar
Traditional ‘Bonderam’ (sort of flags festival) celebrated at Malar,
Divar Island on 20th Aug. 2011. Organised by St. Mathias Sports Club.
This is the first time I ever attended ‘Bonderam’ of Malar.
I think it consists of 4 wards from which four different floats/groups
participate in the parade, starting with traditional flags March with brass band.
The groups were dancing to the tune/songs of H Briton, Remo (O Maria),
Lorna etc
Besides, there was fancy dress competition for both young and old but was
not available to be watched by all. see pic
Our tiatrist Com.64, also from Divar, dressed as Eunuchs or Hinjra
stole the show as can be seen in the video.
Here are some pics. (see video in the end)

Next Saturday, there is yet another such but grand festival at the same island at Piedade.
Like everything else in Goa, the festivals too never start on time. There is always a delay of upto 90 minutes or even more. e.g. at Malar, it was announced at 4pm but actually it started soon after the VIPs like ministers arrived around 5.30pm. luckily it was not raining. it did rain rest of the day though. Piedade too never starts on time

John Bosco (Italian: Giovanni Melchiorre Bosco; 16 August 1815 – 31 January 1888), was an Italian Catholic priest, educator and writer of the 19th century, who put into practice the convictions of his religion, dedicating his life to the betterment and education of street children, juvenile delinquents, and other disadvantaged youth and employing teaching methods based on love rather than punishment, a method that is known as the preventive system.[2] A follower of the spirituality and philosophy of Francis de Sales, Bosco dedicated his works to him when he founded the Society of St. Francis de Sales (more commonly known as the Salesian Society or the Salesians of Don Bosco). Together with Maria Domenica Mazzarello, he founded the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, a religious congregation of nuns dedicated to the care and education of poor girls, and popularly known as Salesian Sisters. In 1876 Bosco founded a movement of laity, the Salesian Cooperators, with the same educational mission to the poor. In 1875 he published Bibliofilo Cattolico - Bollettino Salesiano Mensuale (The Catholic Book Lover - Salesian Monthly Bulletin.) The Bulletin has remained in continuous publication, and is currently published in 50 different editions and 30 languages
Bosco succeeded in establishing a network of organizations and centres to
carry on his work. He was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1934.

Dona Paula, hotspot for Bollywood film shooting (Murder2 , Singham etc)
Dona Paula, hotspot for Bollywood film shooting
The most recent films Murder2 and Singham were shot here.
Singham has many scenes at Dona Paula including main fights – typical of a super cop.
In one scene, the hero cop (Ajay Devgn) shown lifting a lamp pole
with round lamp (from the fence). There are no such lamps at the jetty.
Feb: 2019
Dona Paula jetty is closed for tourist from late 2018 for renovation
when it will be re-opened still not known.
First half of it still open though
https://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk25/48982234282/in/dateposted-public/
It may be reminded that 1981 hit film EK DUJE KE LIYE
with Kamal Hasan, Rati Agnihotri etc was also shot here at Dona Paula.
Another peculiarity of Dona Paula is that the whole road leading to the
jetty is like a fashion street of Dhobitalau.
Readymade Garments exclusively sold by the locals
(no outsiders, no migrants vendors).
Another, favourite item of mine is 'smoked corn/Maize' Rs. 20
again, sold by the locals, something I only seen and ate at Dona Paula
Dona Paula
'Dona Paula' is like saying Lady Paula (or for that matter Lady Diana).
'Dona' is the title given to married woman or is a Portuguese custom to address
married ladies and hence Dona Sylvia, Dona Alcina, Dona Terezinha, Dona Maria etc
Men are addressed as 'Dom' e.g. Dom Quixote, Dom Matin
(or even Dom Perignon which is also a name of a person).
Goa was under Portugal regime for over 450 years or until 1961.
Dona Paula or Lady Paula was a daughter of a rich man (Viceroy) of a Portuguese family.
She was so helpful to the locals / villagers that the villagers changed
their original village name to 'Dona Paula' which is named after her (Paula died in 1682).
So, it may be wrong to say 'a crow sitting on Dona Paula'
The sculpture or the statues seen at the Jetty (see pic) may have nothing
to do with Lady Paula.
to do with Lady Paula.
Although many versions or legends associated with it.
Tourist guides may tell different stories about it e.g.
Dona & Paulo are two different persons or lovers etc
Tourist guides may tell different stories about it e.g.

The statues could be around 150 years old.
We visted Dona Paula this evening at 6pm (5.8.11)

The jetty
did you know?
There was a regular vapor or boat or Launch services to and from
Mormugao (Vasco) Harbour from here.
Now, our Govt. talking about the sea-link project costing over Rs.1000 crores
plus STD 10% minister's commission etc.
New BJP Govt (2012) not in favour of Sea-link
It may consider fast ferry services instead.

August Month - Patollio or Patoddio or Patoyo
Patollio or patoyo are common with both Hindus and Christians in Goa.
Traditionally, dates for Patollio are Aust 5, 6 etc in the south (Salcette.Mormugao etc)
Many celebrate on 15th August.
Where as Goan Hindus celebrate it on Nag Panchami which is today the 4th Aug. 2011.
Many Hindus will also prepare it on Ganesh Chaturti which falls on Sept.1 this year.
Patoyo or Patoddio are either baked on Tava etc
or steamed (mostly steamed, like that of San'nas /Idlies).
Main ingredients are:
Ground rice paste (some may even do with wheat flour etc, we used it too)
Grated coconut / Jaggery (godd) mixture for fillings
and offcourse, patolle panam (turmeric leaves as shown in the pic above)
(some even used pimpal leaves see pic/link and many even used 'Bendde Panan', 'Kelli Pannam'
all other times' - We did with Pimpol and Benddi)
Click on any one and you will find there is atleast one which is common to all
